As more people take an interest in natural alternatives to medications and products, one ingredient they are likely to come across at one point or another is velvet antler extract, also sometimes referred to as VAE. As a vertically integrated company that has been designing, manufacturing and distributing this product nationwide for over a year, we are thrilled that so many people are learning about the benefits of VAE and incorporating it into their diet. But because it is still relatively new, we understand that it may raise a lot of questions for some people—like what it is, where it comes from, and how it is made. We want to take a few minutes to clear the air on some of this confusion and get down to the details to let our customers know not only how and why it is so effective, but where its origin stems from.
The History & Process of Velvet Antler Extract
This super food ingredient is extracted from the antlers of male deer and elk. It has been used for its medicinal properties and powerful healing effects in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years! It has been around for centuries because it has proven success for treating and preventing a wide range of health conditions and ailments—from excessive fatigue and irritability to hormone imbalances and trouble sleeping.
While using a product that comes from the antler of an animal may be a strange concept for some people to wrap their heads around, we can assure you that it is entirely safe and human process. Antlers are one of the only naturally re-generating organs of mammals.
- The velvet antler extract comes from clipping the antlers while they are in the growth phase (which is completely painless to the elk, and is very similar to humans clipping their fingernails). They are never in danger during this process, nor do they experience any discomfort. Because the antlers regrow every year, this makes the product environmentally friendly and completely sustainable.
- After it is clipped, it is freeze-dried to allow for preservation of its constituents. This allows for a nutrient-dense product that doesn’t lose its benefits in the process of production and distribution.
While there are some companies out there who claim to use velvet antler extract, many actually use synthetic versions—which can cause negative side effects. But at BioProtein Technology, we have an advantage because we are able to oversee the entire extraction process—from the conception of the deer and elk on our family farm in Idaho to the bottling of the VAE products. This enables us to make sure we are offering a product that is of the highest, most superior quality and, therefore, offers the most benefits to our customers.
